Personal Life
Jim McKelvey is one of five children who grow up in a Catholic home under the care of a mother who worked full time as a nurse. Her growing family of four boys and one girl forced her to accept welfare assistance from the State of New Jersey. Jim's father, who left the family when Jim was quite young, died an alcoholic at the age of 44. After high school, Jim attended Rutgers University but had to drop out for financial reasons before completing his college education.
Jim married in 1979 and has two daughters ages 17 and 9. Jim and his wife have a separation agreement and have maintained separate households for several years. They continue to have a close relationship and mutual concern for the welfare of their two daughters. They are also business partners in their land and development investments in the Smith Mountain Lake area.
Career
Jim began his career in construction while still living in New Jersey in 1983 and continued to build homes there until 1994 when he moved to Moneta, Virginia. Since moving to Virginia, he has expanded his business to include residential and commercial development. His successful business has allowed Jim to become involved in several charitable organizations and local community activities.
Politics
Although Jim has actively supported the local Republican candidates in the past two years, he has never held or run for any public office.
